As COP16 approaches, are we truly supporting Brazil’s smallholders who conserve beyond legal mandates?

In Brazil, #family #farmers and small-to-medium landowners are essential guardians of the 🌱 Atlantic Forest, safeguarding 12% of its remaining fragments. These dedicated stewards don’t just follow regulations like the Legal Reserve and APP (Permanent Preservation Areas); they often exceed them. Yet, what recognition or reward do they receive for their efforts? Practically none.

As global conversations turn to #biodiversitycredits, these farmers are left feeling unsupported by both the #market and #government. Their message is clear: without substantial backing, the cost of conservation becomes unsustainable.

🌳 Many must make difficult choices between preservation and livelihood, as there’s no financial recognition for the land they protect.

With #COP16 shining a spotlight on global #biodiversity goals, we should be asking ourselves:

👉 How can we create mechanisms that genuinely value these farmers’ contributions?

👉 Can #biodiversitycredits finally evolve into a practical, impactful solution?

👉 How can we ensure fair recognition and compensation for those who preserve beyond what’s required?

🌎 Private lands are often rich in biodiversity, yet there’s no viable market to support these smallholders. To drive meaningful change, we need #policies, #investments, and #market mechanisms that see family farmers as pivotal partners in the mission to conserve our planet’s natural heritage.

Let’s work toward a future of conservation that values not only the land but also the people who dedicate themselves to protecting it. 🤝💚
